H.6 Debugging Mail Delivery Problems

The SMTP server service is only used to receive incoming mail. It is not used to deliver the message to local users, or to relay the message to remote users on remote SMTP servers. These functions are provided by the UCMSEND.NLM delivery agent.

If you are encountering difficulties sending mail to a local or remote user, or are receiving error messages related to a message in the queue, you can unload UCMSEND.NLM and examine the files in the queue directory (SYS:/USR/SPOOL/MQUEUE by default). Unloading UCMSEND.NLM does not prevent your system from accepting new mail from other SMTP systems, as the SMTP server functions are provided by UCMSMTP.NLM. Nor does unloading UCMSEND.NLM prevent users from accessing their mailboxes using POP3, as the POP3 server functions are provided by UCMPOP.NLM. If you wish to disable all of these services while you are debugging the queue, you should use the UCMSTOP command to unload all of the services provided by Unoverica Message Transport.

To unload UCMSEND, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :UNLOAD UCMSEND <Enter>

To unload all of the Unoverica Message Transport components, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :UCMSTOP <Enter>

STEP: To continue to the next step in the troubleshooting process, go to section H.6.1 Mail Message Components.
