2.4 Updating the Naming Services
Before the TCP/IP configuration is complete, you must update the various naming services in
use on your network. There are three distinct areas that need to be addressed:
- Add the local system to the local HOSTS file. Also, if you are not using DNS
on your network, then you must also add this host's information to the other
TCP/IP systems on your network. For more information on how to edit the
HOSTS file, refer to section 2.4.1 Update the HOSTS Database.
- If DNS is in use on your network, then you must add the local system to the
DNS servers responsible for this domain. For more information on how this
subject, refer to section 2.4.2 Update the DNS Server Databases.
- If DNS is in use on your network, then you must configure this system so that
it able to conduct DNS lookups. For more information on how to enable the
DNS client portion of the TCP/IP stack, refer to section 2.4.3 Enable DNS Client
Lookups.
For more information about the different naming services used with TCP/IP, refer to Appendix
C: Name Resolution Services.
STEP: To continue to the next step in the configuration process, go to section 2.4.1 Update the
