1.2.3 Verifying TCP/IP Protocol Version

The NetWare operating system comes with a TCP/IP protocol suite which provides network services to the TCP/IP applications running on the NetWare server. Although Unoverica Message Transport has been written to work with as many different versions of Novell's TCP/ IP protocol suite as possible, you should still update the NetWare server with the latest versions wherever possible.

Figure 1.3 below lists the minimum versions of TCP/IP required by Unoverica Message Transport, as well as any later versions which will provide improved performance. Unoverica Corporation suggests that you install the preferred versions wherever possible, although conflicts with other NLMs may prevent this. You must obtain and install at least the minimum versions listed below.

Figure 1.3 Minimum and preferred versions of Novell's TCP/IP protocol suite required by Unoverica Message Transport.

Operating System

Minimum Version

Preferred Version

NetWare 3.1x

TCP188

TCPN03

NetWare 4.x

TCP201

TCPN03

IntranetWare 1.0

(base)

TCPN03

To identify the version of TCP/IP running on your NetWare server, type the following command from the NetWare console prompt:

 :MODULES <Enter>

If TCPIP.NLM is loaded then it will be displayed in the list of active NLMs. Make a note of the version number of each of these modules. If TCPIP.NLM is not loaded, you will need to load it manually in order to get the version information. To load this NLM, type the following command from the NetWare console prompt:

 :LOAD TCPIP <Enter>

This command will display the major and minor release versions of the TCPIP.NLM. Make a note of the version number of this module.

If there are error messages such as "Unable to find load file TCPIP" then the software is either not installed or has not been installed correctly. In either case, you will need to retrieve the minimum required BTRIEVE.NLM and add it to the NetWare server.

For information on how to obtain and apply the necessary system updates, refer to section 1.2.4 Obtaining Updates and Patch Kits.

NOTE: Some of the required modifications listed in this chapter will require that you restart the server. Do not begin the installation process or apply any system updates until you are able to restart the server without interrupting user sessions or critical system functions.

WARNING: If the NetWare server you wish to use for Unoverica Message Transport does not meet the minimum system requirements specified in this chapter, you will encounter problems during the installation or operation of Unoverica Message Transport. These problems may be minor annoyances, a lack of expected functionality (such as mail messages not getting delivered successfully), or total system failure resulting in lost data.

STEP: If you need to update your system, go to section 1.2.4 Obtaining Updates and Patch Kits. Otherwise, otherwise go to section 1.2.5 Optimizing the Server.
