A.3 More About IPX and Related Protocols

NetWare's native protocol set is a fairly large and complex family, consisting of many different protocols and services. Although not as comprehensive as TCP/IP, the NetWare protocol suite is fine-tuned for local area networks, designed for high performance on small-to-medium networks. IPX and the related protocols perform limited functions at a very fast clip, and are exceptional protocols for local corporate networks.

The heart of the NetWare protocol suite is based largely on Xerox' XNS (Xerox Network System). In fact, the two are almost identical, with the exception of some slight differences in some of the sub-protocols. For example, Novell's IPX (or Internetwork Packet Exchange) is based on Xerox' IDP (or Internetwork Datagram Packet). Because XNS includes protocols for special purpose applications such as mail handling, NetWare only uses a few of the basic essentials, and has ignored the rest.

The NetWare protocol suite looks something like Figure A.4 below.

For more information on IPX, refer to section A.3.1 Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX). For more information on SPX, refer to section A.3.2 Sequenced Packet Exchange (SPX). For more information on PEP and NCP, refer to section A.3.3 Packet Exchange Protocol (PEP) and the NetWare Core Protocol (NCP). For more information on SAP, refer to section A.3.4 Service Advertisement Protocol (SAP). For more information on IPX routing, refer to section A.3.5 Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and NetWare Link State Protocol (NLSP).
