3.4 Starting and Stopping Unoverica Message Transport

During installation, two NetWare Command Files (NCFs) are created and placed into the SYS:/ SYSTEM directory. These NCF files allow you to start and stop Unoverica Message Transport easily, and are called UCMSTART.NCF and UCMSTOP.NCF, respectively.

To start Unoverica Message Transport, including the SMTP and POP3 servers, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :UCMSTART <Enter>

To stop Unoverica Message Transport, including the SMTP and POP3 server, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :UCMSTOP <Enter>

You can also load and unload individual portions of the Unoverica Message Transport mail server individually. Although most installations will prefer to run the entire Unoverica Message Transport mail server package, some sites may not wish to do so all of the time, or may not choose to use all of the services provided in Unoverica Message Transport.

For example, some network administrators may not wish to use the POP3 mail server, instead choosing to only use the SMTP mail server for relay purposes. In this case, you could choose to unload the UCMPOP.NLM module, after loading the mail server using the UCMSTART NCF file. To unload UCMPOP.NLM, execute the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :UNLOAD UCMPOP.NLM <Enter>

To load the POP3 server again, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :LOAD UCMPOP.NLM <Enter>

Although Unoverica Message Transport will not function as expected without the SMTP server loaded, there may be times when you wish to unload it. To unload the SMTP server, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :UNLOAD UCMSMTP.NLM <Enter>

To load the SMTP server again, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :LOAD UCMSMTP.NLM <Enter>

There may also be times when you wish to unload the mail delivery agent. Note that both local delivery to users' mailboxes and remote delivery over SMTP are disabled by this operation. To unload the mail delivery agent, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :UNLOAD UCMSEND.NLM <Enter>

To load the delivery agent again, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :LOAD UCMSEND.NLM <Enter>

STEP: To configure Unoverica Message Transport's user accounts, go to Chapter 4: Managing Mail Accounts. To configure Unoverica Message Transport's mail routing services, allowing mail to be sent and received to a domain, or to configure Unoverica Message Transport to work with a firewall, go to Chapter 5: Configuring Mail Routing.
