4.4.3 Managing External Alias Files

Aliases stored in external text files outside of the internal directory use the standard SENDMAIL-based alias file format. These files use two-columns to delineate alias accounts and alias recipeints, similar to the following:

 postmaster:     supervisor
 MAILER-DAEMON:  postmaster
 webmaster:      postmaster

The first column defines an incoming alias account, while the second column defines the alias recipient account(s) that get mail sent to the alias account. You can define three different types of recipient addresses:

• RFC-822 e-mail address. You can define a standard RFC-822 e-mail address, referencing either a local user account or alias, or the e-mail address of a remote user or alias. Unoverica Message Transport allows alias accounts to refer to other aliases, so as long as the destination e-mail address is valid, it is acceptable.
  
  
• Forced delivery to a user account. If an alias has the same name as a local user's "Mail Name", then you can force delivery of incoming mail to the user account (bypassing the alias) by preceding the Mail Name with a backslash "\". For example, to force mail sent to the "FRED" alias to go to the mail account named "FRED", define the alias recipient account as "\FRED". This feature is useful for executives who have copies of their mail sent to themselves and their secretaries. Refer to section G.6 In-Bound Mail Delivery Precedence for more information on delivery precedence.
  
  
• An external list of destination accounts. If you wish to send mail to several recipients, then you may wish to reference an external text file instead of adding multiple recipients to the alias account. By using the ":include:" statement followed by a valid NetWare path and filename, any mail sent to the alias account will get sent to all of the e-mail addresses listed in that text file. The included text file should contain valid RFC-822 e-mail addresses, one per line.
  

To edit the external alias text file, load it in your favorite text editor and make any modifications that you require.
