6.5.3 Adjusting the POP3 Server Timeout

When a POP3 client connects to the local POP3 server, the server will wait for a certain amount of time for a POP3 command (such as "USER") before dropping the connection. If no command is received and a timeout occurs, the connection is dropped. If you have many POP3 users who are in remote offices or who dial in to the network, then you may wish to increase this option to accommodate them.

This is achieved through the use of Unoverica Message Transport's UCMCON.NLM management tool. UCMCON.NLM is a NetWare Loadable Module that runs on the NetWare server. To load UCMCON, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

 :LOAD UCMCON <Enter>

You will be presented with a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 6.38 below:

Figure 6.38 UCMCON's main menu.

Select the "Configuration" menu item and press <Enter>. You will then be presented with a set of configuration menu choices similar to the one shown in Figure 6.39 below:

Figure 6.39 UCMCON's Configuration menu.

Select the "Options" menu option and press <Enter>. You will then be presented with a list of the currently defined options, similar to the one shown in Figure 6.40 below:

Figure 6.40 UCMCON's currently-defined options.

Use the <Up>, <Dn>, <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys to scroll through the list of currently-defined options, and look for an entry titled "Read timeout for POP3 server commands". If this option is not listed, press <Ins> to display a list of the undefined options. You will be presented with a screen similar to the one shown in Figure 6.41 below:

If the "Read timeout for POP3 server commands" option was not available in the list of currently-defined options, then select it from the list of undefined options and press <Enter>. If the "Read timeout for POP3 server commands" option was already in the list of currently- defined options, then select it from that list and press <Enter>. You will be presented with an edit box for changing the timeout value, similar to the one shown in Figure 6.42 below:

You can increase or decrease the number as needed, and can also change the time unit. The supported time units available are seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks.

WARNING: You should not set this option value to an excessively low or high amount.

For more information on the "Read timeout for POP3 server commands" option, refer to section F.2.31 Read timeout for POP3 server commands.
