Because POP3 uses ASCII commands, it is extremely easy to debug connections. You can use the testing procedures described in section H.5.3 Testing the POP3 Service to verify that you are able to achieve connectivity to the POP3 server.
Most problems with POP3 revolve around the user's mailbox on the mail server. For example, if a large attachment has been sent to a user, then the mail server may take a while to move the message and attachment into the users mailbox. During this time, the mailbox will be locked by the system to prevent it from getting corrupted. If a user is unable to retrieve mail for short periods of time, it is probably because the mailbox is locked by another process.
If the user is unable to retrieve mail for an extended period of time, it may be due to an incorrect username or password. It is also possible that the mailbox has become corrupted, or that the system is not able to allocate sufficient space for the user's mail.
For information on how to isolate out-bound delivery problems, refer to section H.6 Debugging Mail Delivery Problems.
