Chapter 1: Preparing for Installation

1.2.5 Optimizing the Server

In addition to the patches and updates listed in sections 1.2.1.1 Mandatory NetWare System Patches, 1.2.2 Verifying BTRIEVE and 1.2.3 Verifying TCP/IP Protocol , Unoverica Corporation requires that you define some NetWare variables that will allow Unoverica Message Transport to run more efficiently. These parameters must be defined in the NetWare server’s STARTUP.NCF file.

For information on these variables, refer to the NetWare documentation. For information on how to edit STARTUP.NCF, refer to the NetWare documentation.

The three system variables that must be defined are:

Increase the PACKET RECEIVE BUFFERS setting. For more information about this setting, refer to section 1.2.5.1 Increase the Packet Receive Buffers.
NetWare 3.x servers will need to have the MAXIMUM ALLOC SHORT-TERM MEMORY variable increased. For more information about this setting, refer to section 1.2.5.2 Increase NetWare 3.1x’s Short-Term Memory Pool.
Set the NetWare TIMEZONE variable. For more information about this setting, refer to section 1.2.5.3 Set the NetWare TIMEZONE Variable.

NOTE: Some of the required modifications listed in this chapter will require that you restart the server. Do not begin the installation process or apply any system updates until you are able to restart the server without interrupting user sessions or critical system functions.

WARNING: If the NetWare server you wish to use for Unoverica Message Transport does not meet the minimum system requirements specified in this chapter, you will encounter problems during the installation or operation of Unoverica Message Transport. These problems may be minor annoyances, a lack of expected functionality (such as mail messages not getting delivered successfully), or total system failure resulting in lost data.
