1.2.5.2 Increase NetWare 3.1x’s Short-Term Memory Pool

On NetWare 3.x servers, the "SHORT TERM MEMORY" variable defines the amount of system memory that server-based applications and other non-permanent processes have access to. If this short-term memory pool is drained, then applications and end-users will begin to experience problems. By increasing the size of this memory pool, server-based applications will work effectively without impacting user connections or other processes.

NetWare 4.x servers allocate memory for this pool automatically, and does not need to have this variable defined.

NOTE: By increasing the size of this memory pool, you are also reducing the amount of memory available to the operating system’s core services. If you have sufficient memory on your server, this should not present any problems. If you do not have sufficient memory installed on your server, you MUST correct this prior to using the Unoverica Message Transport.

For information on this variable, refer to the NetWare documentation. For information on how to edit STARTUP.NCF, refer to the NetWare documentation.

NOTE: Do NOT set this variable’s value greater than the total memory installed on the server.

For NetWare 3.11 servers, add the following command to STARTUP.NCF:

For NetWare 3.12 servers, add the following command to STARTUP.NCF:

NOTE: These commands can also exist in the NetWare AUTOEXEC.NCF file. However, it is possible that they will not be acted on properly by the operating system if they are not in the STARTUP.NCF file. You should add these commands to the STARTUP.NCF file, and verify that they do NOT exist in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file.

NOTE: You will need to restart the NetWare server in order for these settings to take effect. Do not begin the installation process until you are able to restart the server without interrupting user sessions or critical system functions.

WARNING: If the NetWare server you wish to use for Unoverica Message Transport does not meet the minimum system requirements specified in this chapter, you will encounter problems during the installation or operation of Unoverica Message Transport. These problems may be minor annoyances, a lack of expected functionality (such as mail messages not getting delivered successfully), or total system failure resulting in lost data.

STEP: To continue to the next step in the verification process, go to section 1.2.5.3 Set the NetWare TIMEZONE Variable.
