1.2.5.3 Set the NetWare TIMEZONE Variable

In order for the SMTP server in Unoverica Message Transport to function properly, it must be able to determine the timezone in which it is in. This is important so that accurate delivery times can be provided in the system logs and in the messages themselves. Furthermore, many mail servers will not accept mail from a system that does not provide a timezone, as those other systems also want to ensure the integrity of the messages they process.

NetWare has a pre-defined TIMEZONE variable, although it is not used by very many NetWare applications or administrators, and is undefined on most systems. This parameter needs to be defined in order for Unoverica Message Transport to run effectively.

The TIMEZONE variable takes a three-part command-line parameter consisting of the timezone name, the off-set from Greenwich Mean Time in hours, and the daylight savings timezone name. For example, the timezone for California is "PST8PDT". The three components of this are "PST" (which refers to "Pacific Standard Time"), "8" (the off-set from Greenwich Mean Time in hours), and "PDT" (which refers to "Pacific Daylight Time").

For more information on this variable, refer to the NetWare documentation. For information on how to edit STARTUP.NCF, refer to the NetWare documentation.

The four most common settings for the United States are:

If you are outside of the United States, please refer to your local timezone references for the appropriate setting for this variable.

For all versions of NetWare, add the following commands to STARTUP.NCF:

NOTE: These commands can also exist in the NetWare AUTOEXEC.NCF file. However, it is possible that they will not be acted on properly by the operating system if they are not in the STARTUP.NCF file. You should add these commands to the STARTUP.NCF file, and verify that they do NOT exist in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file.

NOTE: You will need to restart the NetWare server in order for these settings to take effect. Do not begin the installation process until you are able to restart the server without interrupting user sessions or critical system functions.

WARNING: If the NetWare server you wish to use for Unoverica Message Transport does not meet the minimum system requirements specified in this chapter, you will encounter problems during the installation or operation of Unoverica Message Transport. These problems may be minor annoyances, a lack of expected functionality (such as mail messages not getting delivered successfully), or total system failure resulting in lost data.

STEP: To continue to the next step in the verification process, go to section 1.3 Minimum Disk and Memory Requirements.
