Chapter 1: Preparing for Installation

1.3 Minimum Disk and Memory Requirements

In order for Unoverica Message Transport to process, store and deliver mail, it must have sufficient disk space and system memory.

The mail server requires access to system memory in order to process mail messages, to expand addresses on mailing lists, and to perform delivery functions. These memory requirements vary widely depending on your installation and your planned usage of the features provided by Unoverica Message Transport.

In addition, Unoverica Message Transport consists of several software components, configuration files and mail databases which reside on your NetWare server’s volumes. The disk space required to store these files will also vary widely depending on your installation and your planned usage of the features provided by Unoverica Message Transport.

In order to determine the amount of memory you will need, determine which of the following scenarios closest represents your planned usage and then verify that the minimum memory and disk space requirements are satisfied prior to installing Unoverica Message Transport:

No POP3 mail users and little SMTP traffic. For more information about this setup, refer to section 1.3.1 Scenario 1: Local SMTP Relay Server Only.
A few POP3 mail users and light SMTP traffic. For more information about this setup, refer to section 1.3.2 Scenario 2: Basic SMTP/POP3 Installation.
Many POP3 mail users and moderate to heavy SMTP traffic. For more information about this setup, refer to section 1.3.3 Scenario 3: Complex SMTP/POP3 Installation.
Many POP3 mail users, heavy SMTP traffic, and heavy use of the alias database and mailing list features. For more information about this setup, refer to section 1.3.4 Scenario 4: Extremely Complex SMTP/POP3 Installation.

In addition to these scenarios, you may also need to set aside additional disk space, depending upon whether or not users will store their mail on the server or on their local hard drives. For more information about the per-user disk-space factors, refer to section 1.3.5 Per-User Disk Space Requirements.

WARNING: If the NetWare server you wish to use for Unoverica Message Transport does not meet the minimum system requirements specified in this chapter, you will encounter problems during the installation or operation of Unoverica Message Transport. These problems may be minor annoyances, a lack of expected functionality (such as mail messages not getting delivered successfully), or total system failure resulting in lost data.
