Organizations or departments who wish to use Internet-standard mail protocols such as SMTP and POP3 will need to enable both of these servers, as well as provide disk space for them and the underlying software components.
To determine the disk space required for your POP3 mail users, you will need to consider two primary factors:
In general, smaller SMTP/POP3 installations can plan on needing approximately 100 megabytes of disk space for their mail, while larger or more complicated installations will need 500 megabytes or more. These recommendation take into account the fact that most mail messages are quite small, although infrequent messages with large attachments are also likely. If you will be using the mail server frequently, or if you expect to be processing larger mail messages, then you should increase the minimum recommendations considerably.
