POP3 mail products store all mail on the server until it is explicitly deleted by the POP3 client. Some organizations prefer to delete the mail from the server as soon at is retrieved by the client, allowing the user to file or delete the messages locally. Conversely, some organizations prefer to store the mail on the server until it is explicitly deleted by the user, allowing the messages to be included in network backup procedures.
If your users will be deleting mail as soon at is downloaded, then you will not need to add any extra disk space to the per-user disk requirements. However, if your users will be leaving their mail on the server permanently, then you will need to take this into consideration when planning your disk space requirements. A good rule of thumb is to plan on each user consuming approximately 100 megabytes of disk space every six months. If the users leave the mail on the server, then this 100 megabyte-per-user requirement will need to be addressed when planning for server capacity. Otherwise, you will need to plan on a user requiring this disk space on their PC.
