2.2.2.2 Using EDIT to Read AUTOEXEC.NCF

Systems that do not use INETCFG to manage LAN drivers and protocols typically store the commands to load these drivers and protocols in the NetWare server’s AUTOEXEC.NCF. To read this file, you can open it using the NetWare EDIT.NLM utility, or any client-based text editor.

To use NetWare’s EDIT utility to read the AUTOEXEC.NCF file, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

:LOAD EDIT SYS:/SYSTEM/AUTOEXEC.NCF <Enter>

You will then be presented with a console screen similar to the following:

Use the information provided in this screen to fill out the "LAN Driver Information" portion of the form in Figure 2.1.

Locate the command in AUTOEXEC.NCF that loads the LAN driver. Note the name of the LAN driver and write it in the "LAN Driver Filename" field of the configuration worksheet. In the example shown above, the "LAN Driver Filename" field would contain "SMC8000".
Note any parameters that appear after after the LAN driver command (except for any "FRAME=" or "NAME=" parameters), and write them in the "LAN Driver LOAD Parameters" field of the configuration worksheet. In the example shown above, the "LAN Driver LOAD Parameters" field would contain "PORT=240 INT=3 MEM=D0000".
Determine whether the LAN medium is Ethernet, Token Ring or FDDI. You may need to examine the cable for this. Check the appropriate box in the "LAN Topology/Medium" field of the configuration worksheet. In the example shown above, the "LAN Topology/Medium" field would have a check next to "Ethernet".
Determine whether the "Frame Type for TCP/IP" should be "ETHERNET_II" or "TOKEN-RING_SNAP". The "TOKEN-RING_SNAP" option is used for both Token Ring and FDDI adapters. Check the appropriate box in the "Frame Type for TCP/IP" field of the configuration worksheet. In the example shown above, the "Frame Type for TCP/IP" field would have a check next to "ETHERNET_II".
Determine an appropriate name to use for the new instance of the LAN driver that you will be loading for TCP/IP to use, and write that name in the "Name to Assign this Frame Type" field of the configuration worksheet. You can choose any name you wish, although it should have some sort of indicative meaning. In the example shown above, the "Name to Assign this Frame Type" would contain "SMC-TCPIP".

Press <Esc> to close the EDIT utility and return to the NetWare console prompt. Do not save any changes unless you are sure that you made them on purpose.
