2.3 Configuring and Starting TCP/IP

Prior to configuring and starting the TCP/IP protocols, you must gather the configuration details pertinent to your installation. Section 2.2 Preparing to Configure TCP/IP discusses this subject in detail, and also provides a configuration worksheet that must be completed. You must complete the worksheet prior to continuing the configuration process.

Configuring and starting the TCP/IP protocol consists of three distinct steps:

Loading the LAN driver for the network adapter installed in your NetWare server.
Loading the TCP/IP protocol stack.
Binding the TCP/IP protocol to the LAN driver.

These three steps are accomplished in different ways, depending on your server environment:

If you are running NetWare 4.11, IntranetWare, Novell’s Multi-Protocol Router, NetWare for SAA or other advanced communication service, then you are probably using the NetWare INETCFG.NLM utility to manage your LAN drivers and IPX protocols. You should continue using INETCFG to manage the TCP/IP protocols. For more information on using INETCFG, refer to section 2.3.1 Using INETCFG.
If you are not using INETCFG, then you can execute these commands from the NetWare server’s console prompt, and you can also add them to the server’s AUTOEXEC.NCF file as well. For more information on how to load and start the LAN driver and TCP/IP protocols manually, refer to section 2.3.2 Using Console Commands.
