Chapter 2: Configuring TCP/IP

Previous Page Next Page

2.3.1.5 Start the TCP/IP Protocol

To end the configuration session, press <Esc> at INETCFG’s main screen. If you have made any changes to the system then you will be informed of such. You will also be told that you must either restart the server or issue the "reinitialize system" command from the NetWare console prompt.

You should now try to start TCP/IP using the "reinitialize system" command, although there may be situations where this is not appropriate. For example, if you have many users accessing a system through NetWare for SAA, or if you have many users accessing remote systems across a WAN link via Novell’s Multi-Protocol Router, then you may not want to risk disturbing their connections. In these types of scenarios, you should wait until such a time as you can restart the server cleanly.

To reinitialize the LAN drivers and protocol configuration, type the following command from the NetWare console prompt:

:REINITIALIZE SYSTEM <Enter>

This command is easily misspelled, so if you receive "Unknown Command" errors check the spelling of the command and try again. If you receive warning or other error messages during the loading or binding of TCP/IP, you may have misconfigured some of the settings. If this happens, verify the information on the configuration worksheet, and then compare it to the information that you entered into the various INETCFG menus.

STEP: To continue to the next step in the configuration process, go to section 2.4 Updating the Naming Services.
