2.4 Updating the Naming Services

Before the TCP/IP configuration is complete, you must update the various naming services in use on your network. There are three distinct areas that need to be addressed:

  1. Add the local system to the local HOSTS file. Also, if you are not using DNS on your network, then you must also add this host’s information to the other TCP/IP systems on your network. For more information on how to edit the HOSTS file, refer to section 2.4.1 Update the HOSTS Database.

  2. If DNS is in use on your network, then you must add the local system to the DNS servers responsible for this domain. For more information on how this subject, refer to section 2.4.2 Update the DNS Server Databases.

  3. If DNS is in use on your network, then you must configure this system so that it able to conduct DNS lookups. For more information on how to enable the DNS client portion of the TCP/IP stack, refer to section 2.4.3 Enable DNS Client Lookups.
