Chapter 3: Installing and Starting Unoverica Message Transport

3.3.3.2 Installed Software and Directories

Unoverica Message Transport consists of two sets of files: the executable and support files, and the raw mail messages (including temporary files).

The executables and support files are installed in the SYS:/SYSTEM directory so that the server can load them easily (SYS:/SYSTEM is always in the server’s search path). The following files are copied to the SYS:/SYSTEM directory during installation:

File

Description

UCCLIB.NLM
UCMCLIB.NLM
UCMDB.NLM
UCOSDEP.NLM
UCRESLIB.NLM

Mail server support files

UCMCON.HLP
UCMCON.MSG

Administration console support files

UCMCON.NLM

Administration console

UCMPOP.NLM

POP3 server

UCMSEND.NLM

SMTP client and local delivery agent

UCMSMTP.NLM

SMTP server

UCMSTART.NCF

NetWare Command File for starting the mail system

UCMSTOP.NCF

NetWare Command File for stopping the mail system

The executables that perform the majority of the mail processing are UCMPOP.NLM, UCMSEND.NLM, and UCMSMTP.NLM. UCMPOP.NLM provides the POP3 mail server functionality, while UCMSMTP.NLM provides the SMTP server services. UCMSEND.NLM provides local delivery of mail, moving incoming messages to the appropriate user’s mailbox for example, and also provides external delivery to remote SMTP servers.

Additionally, two NetWare Command Files (NCFs) are created during installation and are placed into the SYS:/SYSTEM directory as well. These files allow you to start and stop Unoverica Message Transport easily, and are called UCMSTART.NCF and UCMSTOP.NCF, respectively. For more information about starting and stopping Unoverica Message Transport, refer to section 3.4 Starting and Stopping Unoverica Message Transport.

The mail messages and temporary files that are received and sent by Unoverica Message Transport are stored in a private directory tree on the server. This directory tree starts at SYS:/USR, and includes the following directories:

Directory

Description

SYS:/USR/LIB

contains shared configuration files for Unoverica products

SYS:/USR/LIB/MAIL

contains other configuration files for Unoverica Message Transport

SYS:/USR/LIB/UC

contains the server licenses

SYS:/USR/SPOOL

the root of the default spool directory (see below)

SYS:/USR/SPOOL/MAIL

contains the POP3 mailbags

SYS:/USR/SPOOL/MQUEUE

contains out-bound mail messages not yet delivered

SYS:/USR/TMP

contains temporary files created during mail delivery

The SYS:/USR directory tree may not be relocated to another volume on the server. However, the /USR/SPOOL/MAIL and /USR/SPOOL/MQUEUE directories may be relocated to any volume or directory you wish. For information on how to do this, refer to section 6.3.1 Relocating the POP3 and SMTP Mail Directories.

STEP: To continue to the next step in the installation process, go to section 3.4 Starting and Stopping Unoverica Message Transport.
