Chapter 4: Managing Mail Accounts

4.3 Creating and Modifying User Accounts

Before you can manage user accounts in Unoverica Message Transport’s internal directory, you must have enabled the Unoverica Message Transport directory. This procedure is described in section 4.2.2 Enabling the Directory.

NOTE: If you are not using Unoverica Message Transport’s internal directory but are instead using the NetWare user accounts found in the bindery, then Unoverica Message Transport’s internal directory is not referenced by the mail system, and adding users to the directory will have no effect on the mail server’s operation.

Managing Unoverica Message Transport-specific mail accounts is achieved through the use of Unoverica Message Transport’s UCMCON.NLM management tool. To load UCMCON, type the following command at the NetWare console prompt:

:LOAD UCMCON <Enter>

You will be presented with a screen similar to the following:

Select the "Configuration" menu item and press <Enter>. You will then be presented with a set of configuration menu choices similar to the following:

Select the "Directory" menu option and press <Enter>. You will then be presented with a list of directory-specific choices, similar to the following:

To add, edit or delete user accounts from the directory, select the "Users" menu and press <Enter>. You will then be presented with a list of the currently-defined users. If you have not yet defined any local users in the Unoverica Message Transport directory, then the list will be empty.

NOTE: Accounts in this list only apply to users defined within Unoverica Message Transport’s directory. NetWare users will not appear in this list unless they have been manually added, created as a result of directory synchronization, or have been imported through the Import option. By default, this list is blank.

There are three basic operations that you can perform on an user account:

Add a new account to the directory. You may need to create a new user account so that a person can receive mail, or can retrieve mail using the POP3 protocol. Although the synchronization process adds user accounts for all of the existing NetWare users that are stored in the bindery, you may need to add non-NetWare or non-local users to this specific server. For more information on this subject, refer to section 4.3.1 Adding a New User.
Modify an existing account. During the directory synchronization process, all users found in the NetWare bindery are automatically added to Unoverica Message Transport’s internal directory. You will need to modify some of the mail user accounts if duplicate NDS user accounts exist, or if some users need to be identified with a specific domain. For more information on this subject, refer to section 4.3.2 Modifying an Existing User.
Disable or delete an existing account. Not all users need to be able to receive mail. For example, many server-based applications (such as backup agents and the like) have private NetWare accounts that are used to run the server processes, but these accounts do not need to be able to receive mail. For more information on this subject, refer to section 4.3.3 Disabling a User.

STEP: If you need to add a new user account to the directory, go to section 4.3.1 Adding a New User. If you need to modify an existing user account, go to section 4.3.2 Modifying an Existing User.
