4.4 Managing Alias Accounts

An alias account allows users to send mail to a virtual user that does not actually exist on the mail system. Mail sent to the alias account is redirected to other accounts, which can consist of:

• User accounts on the local system.
  
  
• Other alias accounts on the local system.
  
  
• User or alias accounts on remote systems.
  
  
• Any combination of the above
  

Aliases can be used to redirect mail to a single user, or they can be used to redirect mail to a large group of users on a variety of different systems. For example, your organization may wish to send mail to a select group of suppliers, but rather than enter each recipient’s mail address into each message, it would be easier and more accurate to simply send mail to an alias account called "suppliers". This alias would then expand to include all of the recipients, but would still appear as being addressed to "suppliers" instead of to the individual recipients.

Two key factors affect Unoverica Message Transport’s use of aliases:

• Location of the alias database. Unoverica Message Transport can store aliases in the internal directory, and it can also read external text files. For more information about the location of the alias database, refer to section 4.4.1 Changing the Location of the Alias File.
  
  
• The structure of the alias entries. Aliases can take many forms, from simple entries with a single user, to complex references of multiple external files. For more information on these subjects, refer to section 4.4.2 Managing Internal Aliases and section 4.4.3 Managing External Alias.
