Chapter 5: Configuring Mail Routing

5.1 Configuring Mail Routing

By default, Unoverica Message Transport comes pre-configured for a very basic installation. The default configuration will only accept mail if it is addressed to the specific hostname of the system, and will expect to be able to directly connect to any SMTP server it has out-bound mail for. Figure 5.1 below illustrates this setup:

It is very likely that you will need to customize your installation to route mail effectively for your specific environment. The three most common mail-routing scenarios are:

Routing mail for an entire domain. This configuration allows Unoverica Message Transport to accept incoming mail for your DNS domain name, instead of only accepting mail for the specific server. For more information on this subject, refer to section 5.2 Scenario 1: Routing Mail for a Domain.
Sending mail through an external site, such as an Internet Service Provider. Some smaller organizations use external firms as a staging area for in-bound and out-bound mail. For more information on this subject, refer to section 5.3 Scenario 2: Routing Mail Through an External Site.
Managing a multi-server installation. Organizations with large networks may have multiple SMTP/POP3 mail servers installed across their organization. These installations require particular design efforts. For more information on this subject, refer to 5.4 Scenario 3: Multi-Server Installations.
Working with an SMTP firewall. Organizations with full-time Internet connections typically implement an SMTP or TCP firewall that receives and sends mail on behalf of the internal mail servers. For more information on this subject, refer to section 5.5 Scenario 4: Working With a Firewall.
