6.3.3 Enabling PURGE IMMEDIATE on the POP3 and SMTP Mail Directories

The NetWare server automatically keeps track of all the files deleted from the NetWare volumes on the server, allowing you to use SALVAGE and FILER to retrieve files that have been deleted accidentally. While this service is an excellent benefit for network administrators, the tracking process also consumes valuable system memory on the server.

Because Unoverica Message Transport creates and deletes many temporary files while sending, receiving and moving mail throughout the system, a tremendous amount of system resources can be consumed by the server’s tracking process. To prevent this from having a negative impact on your server, you should enable the NetWare PURGE IMMEDIATE attribute on the POP3 and SMTP directories. The PURGE IMMEDIATE attribute tells the NetWare server not to track deleted files in these directories, freeing up a considerable amount of server resources and memory.

There are two common methods for setting the PURGE IMMEDIATE attribute:

The instructions presented here will use Windows NT 4.0’s Explorer for illustration purposes.

NOTE: Both of these scenarios require you to be logged into the network as a supervisor-equivalent user.

To enable the PURGE IMMEDIATE attribute on the POP3 and SMTP directories, start Windows NT’s explorer and select the directory containing the POP3 mailboxes on the NetWare server that is hosting Unoverica Message Transport. By default, this directory is SYS:USR/SPOOL/MAIL. Figure 6.20 below illustrates this process.

Select File/Properties from the menu bar. You will be presented with a dialog box similar to the following:

Click on the "IntranetWare Folder" or "NetWare Folder" tab. This tab will be different between the major NetWare versions, but will have the same basic functionality. This tab will display the current properties of the SYS:USR/SPOOL/MAIL directory, and will look something like the following:

Click the "Purge Immediate" checkbox, and then click "OK" to enable the setting.

Select the directory containing the SMTP queue files and repeat the process detailed above for that directory. By default, the SMTP queue files are stored in SYS:USR/SPOOL/MQUEUE.

STEP: To continue with the configuration process, go to section 6.4 Increasing the Mail System’s Security.
